Publishing Your App on the App Store and Play Store: What to Plan For

Updated on 28 August 2026 2 min read

Publishing a mobile app on the app stores involves specific steps. Here is what to anticipate before launch.

Publishing a mobile app on the App Store and Google Play Store is a project phase in its own right, often underestimated in schedules. Here are the main points to anticipate.

Create developer accounts

Publishing an app requires an Apple developer account and a Google developer account, each subject to its own registration process and fees. These steps can take time, especially on Apple's side, where identity verification for the business is generally required. It's recommended to create these accounts as early as possible in the project, alongside development.

Prepare the store listing materials

  • A clear, optimized app description
  • Representative screenshots across different device formats
  • A polished app icon, following the format requirements of each store
  • A privacy policy, mandatory whenever the app collects user data

Anticipate the review process

Apple applies a relatively strict manual review process, which can result in rejections if the app doesn't meet certain rules (usability, content, data security). Google Play generally applies a more automated, and therefore faster, check. In both cases, it's recommended to leave several days of margin between submission and your desired launch date.

Plan for what comes after publishing

Once published, an app requires ongoing attention: responding to user reviews, fixing reported bugs, and releasing updates to stay compatible with new iOS and Android versions. This maintenance work should be budgeted for from the scoping phase.
