Signs It's Time to Audit Your IT Security
Updated on 28 August 2026 2 min read
Certain internal or external signals should alert a business to the need to audit its IT security without waiting.
Many businesses wait for an incident before considering an IT security audit. Yet several warning signs make it possible to get ahead of the problem before it turns into a crisis.
Recent changes to your infrastructure
Any significant change to your information system is a good trigger to audit your IT security: a cloud migration, opening up remote work at scale, integrating a new business application, or merging with another organization that has its own tools. These changes often create new exposure that wasn't designed with security as a priority from the start.
No checks since the company was founded
Many SMBs build their IT infrastructure gradually, as needs arise, without ever having their overall security level assessed. If no audit has ever been carried out, or the last one dates back several years while the infrastructure has since evolved, that's a strong signal it's time to take stock.
Technical warning signs to watch
- Employees still using shared passwords, or passwords that are never renewed.
- Software or systems that no longer receive security updates.
- Remote access set up quickly without a clear, secure procedure.
- No formal backup and restore policy in place.
External constraints that make an audit near-mandatory
Certain contexts make an audit nearly unavoidable: a client or partner requirement before a partnership, obtaining cybersecurity insurance, or compliance with an industry regulation. Anticipating these requests rather than scrambling to meet them at the last minute lets you negotiate better terms and avoid rushing.
Taking action
If one or more of these signs sound familiar, it's probably time to organize an IT security audit. Our complete IT security audit guide for SMBs details the different approaches available and how they unfold. More resources are available in our Audit and Security category.
