Choosing a native or hybrid app is one of the first technical decisions to make before launching a mobile project. This decision has lasting consequences on budget, timelines, and the app's ability to evolve.

The native app: maximum performance and integration

A native app is built specifically for each operating system, in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android. This approach delivers the best performance and full access to each platform's specific features (sensors, advanced animations, system integrations). In exchange, it requires two separate codebases to build and maintain, which increases budget and timelines.

The hybrid or cross-platform app: speed and controlled budget

Frameworks like React Native or Flutter let you build a single shared codebase for iOS and Android, with a near-native feel. This approach generally reduces development time and budget while keeping a solid user experience for most use cases. It becomes less relevant for apps that are very demanding on graphics performance (complex video games) or that need very deep access to features specific to a single platform.

How to decide based on your project

  • Limited budget and a fast launch on both platforms: cross-platform is often preferable
  • Need for maximum performance or very platform-specific features: native remains the reference
  • App meant primarily to validate an idea (MVP): cross-platform allows faster iteration
