Market Research: When Is It Really Necessary Before Launching a Product?

Updated on 28 August 2026 2 min read

Market research isn't always essential before a launch. Here is when it actually becomes necessary.

Not Always a Necessary Step

Market research isn't systematically essential before every launch: for a small evolution of an already existing offer, the owner's hands-on experience is sometimes enough on its own to validate the project's direction. It becomes particularly useful, however, when the investment involved is significant, or when the project targets a customer base or market the business doesn't yet know well from prior experience.

What Market Research Actually Delivers

Beyond confirming or disproving a hunch, well-run market research reveals information the owner wouldn't have anticipated on their own: mispriced positioning, a customer need different from the one imagined, or denser competition than expected on the segment being targeted. These discoveries, made before launch rather than after, cost far less than adjustments made once the product is already on the market.

Hiring a Specialised Freelancer

A freelance market research consultant brings a rigorous methodology and an outside perspective, less prone to the biases an owner already convinced of their idea can carry into the process. They scale the research to the budget and real stakes of the project, without necessarily resorting to the heavy methods large companies use for much bigger launches. Scaling the Research to the Real Stakes

Market research doesn't necessarily require a large budget: a few dozen well-conducted qualitative interviews with potential customers often yield more actionable information than a broad but shallow quantitative survey sent to thousands of people. The key is matching the method to the specific question you're actually trying to answer before you launch anything at all.
